Penrose Drain is a capillary drain made with corrguated inner for gentle wound drainage by means of capillary suction and gravity.Frequently it is put inplace by a surgeon after a procedure is complete to prevent the area from accumulating fluid, such as blood, which could serve as medium for bactderia to grow in.

Penrose drain is a gentle drainage tube, designed for the fluid to be absorbed into the gauze dressing that surrounds the drain. Patients may change the dressings themselves. Normally used to promote drainage in an open surgical wound. It is suitable for wound drainage in indications when the application of a low-vacuum is contraindicated.
